In a move that could strengthen the Goa’s struggling tourism, the government has taken a decision to permit the casinos in the state to reopen their doors.
Casinos will be allowed to operate from Monday, as per the state government.
But they will have to stick to the stringent protocols related to COVID-19 and operate with 50% capacity.
At a recent Task Force Committee meeting, this decision was taken. The meeting was chaired by Chief Minister, Mr. Pramod Sawant.
In Goa, the positivity rate of covid infection is below two per cent and it was jointly decided that the state should restart its financial activities related to tourism, to be more precise, the CM said.
“Casinos will start from Monday with 50 per cent capacity and strict pandemic protocols. Those who are fully vaccinated or those carrying RT-PCR negative certificates will be allowed to enter. The ban on spas, massage parlours, river cruises, EDMs, night clubs will continue,” Sawant said.
In the coastal state of Goa, there are five offshore casinos and around 10 onshore casinos operating.
This declaration comes before the start of the tourism season in the beach state. It contributes a huge portion of the annual income.
Earlier, Goa Ports Minister Michael Lobo had requested the Chief Minister, Pramod Sawant, to restart the casino industry in the state.
“Goa economic activity will increase with (re-opening of casinos) whether it is taxis, super markets, etc. Our request is that the casino activity should start as soon as possible in the interest of tourism in the state of Goa,” Lobo had said.
On Saturday, Prime Minister, Narendra Modi had given indication that India may soon allow entry for foreign tourists.
