In recent years the icy Arctic wilderness of Europe has become a popular holiday destination more and more. However, in such a fragile ecosystem, is it feasible to manage this growing numbers of tourists?
Visit Arctic Europe, a cross-border project between Finland, Sweden, and Norway, is trying to do just that. In a bid it has brought together 120 companies since 2015 and a dozen tour operators to better protect the unspoiled environment completely.
Kevin and his family always wanted to go on a trip to the Arctic. When we meet him in Finland, on a frozen lake, he and the others in his group have travelled on snowmobiles for an hour to experience traditional fishing. The main requirement is that companies involved in Visit Arctic Europe are requested to do something that makes their business more sustainable. The engines for instance, in the snowmobiles that Kevin and the group are using are less polluting than standard ones.
“It is my first time here and actually what attracted me was the wide-open spaces and the beauty of the landscape… especially the beautiful walks and things like that, for example, we’re are ice fishing. I haven’t caught anything yet, but I’m sure I will,” Kevin said.
