Gatwick, Britain’s second largest airport has appointed American engineer to deliver a £2.7 billion investment programme.
San Francisco-based firm Bechtel will be employed to double the size of pier 6 in the North Terminal which is a £180-million job and the largest single investment in the airport’s redevelopment scheme.
The extension after completion is expected to boost the services and increase the operational efficiency.
IATA supported webinar will explore the trends in airport non-aero sector and help the airports pass through turbulent times.
Post the completion of the project construction will begin, the A380 will move from the existing location on Pier 6 to the newly created one on pier 5.
Then there will be the widening and realigning of taxiway to enable the A380 to move between the runway and to accommodate the 80-metre wing –span .
Bechtel will handle the management of engineering, procurement and construction works that will be integrated in the Gatwick’s construction and development team.
Gatwick’s Construction Director, Raymond Melee mentioned that this is an important programmes of work in the current capital investment programme and will boost to the operational efficiency and help them grow sustainably.
He was grateful for the partnership with Bechtel and was looking forward to deliver the world class project without compromising the airport experience of the passenger.
The work will start in 2018 and the programme will happen in four phases and will include the building of the western extension of Pier 6. It is expected to get operational by the first quarter of 2022.
