Published on January 16, 2026

Georgia saw a remarkable rise in the number of tourists in 2025, with a significant rise of 33% in tourists from Azerbaijan. This is in line with the increasing trend in Georgia’s tourism industry, as the overall tourists to Georgia touched 7.8 million, marking a rise of 5.9% from last year. According to Georgian National Tourism Administration, the rising flow of tourists has helped Georgia become one of the favorite destination points in these regions.

Steady Growth in Georgia’s Tourism Industry

Georgia’s tourism industry experienced strong growth in 2025, with a total of 7.8 million people visiting the country, including transit travelers and foreign tourists. This represents a 5.9% increase compared to 2024, highlighting the country’s growing appeal as a travel destination.

The increase in visitors was largely driven by a rise in the number of foreign tourists, which reached 5.52 million, an 8.4% increase from the previous year. This growth reflects the diverse attractions that Georgia offers, from its picturesque landscapes and historical sites to its burgeoning wine tourism and vibrant culture.

Azerbaijan Leads the Way in Tourist Arrivals

Among the countries contributing to Georgia’s growing number of international visitors, Azerbaijan stands out with one of the highest rates of growth. In 2024, 219,356 Azerbaijani citizens visited Georgia, but in 2025, this number jumped to 292,149, marking an impressive 33.2% increase. This makes Azerbaijan one of the top countries in terms of tourist arrivals to Georgia, further cementing the strong ties between the two neighboring nations.

The reasons for this surge in Azerbaijani tourists are multifaceted. Shared cultural and historical connections, along with geographical proximity, make Georgia an appealing destination for Azerbaijanis. Moreover, the increasing ease of travel, with more direct flights and border crossings, has made Georgia more accessible. The growing number of Azerbaijani tourists reflects the broader trend of increased regional travel in the Caucasus and Central Asia.

A Strong Fourth Quarter for Georgia’s Tourism

The fourth quarter of 2025 saw a significant boost in tourism, with 1.69 million visitors, representing a 7.6% increase compared to the same period in 2024. This surge in tourist arrivals during the final months of the year indicates that Georgia remains a popular year-round destination. This was especially notable given the ongoing global travel recovery, where many destinations were still grappling with post-pandemic challenges.

In comparison, the third quarter of 2025 also saw strong growth, with 2.96 million tourists visiting Georgia, a 6.6% increase over the previous year. The higher visitor numbers in the third quarter reflect the peak summer travel season, where Georgia’s unique blend of outdoor activities, historic cities, and cultural festivals attract large numbers of international travelers.

Top Source Markets for Georgia’s Tourism

According to the National Tourism Administration, Azerbaijan ranked fifth among the top five countries by tourist arrivals to Georgia in 2025. The largest share of visitors came from Russia, with 1.61 million Russian tourists arriving in Georgia in 2025. This marked a 13.4% increase compared to the previous year, solidifying Russia’s position as Georgia’s largest source of tourists.

Following Russia, Türkiye ranked second with 1.26 million visitors, although this represented a slight decrease of 6% from 2024. Despite the decrease, Türkiye remains a strong market for Georgia’s tourism industry, with many visitors traveling for both leisure and business purposes. Armenia placed third, with 962,100 visitors, showing a modest increase of 1.5% compared to the previous year.

Israel ranked fourth with 411,100 visitors, marking a robust 32.2% increase in arrivals. This growth from Israel is indicative of Georgia’s increasing appeal among travelers from the Middle East and Western countries. Israel’s position as a key source market highlights the country’s diverse tourism appeal, which includes history, culture, and nature tourism.

Factors Driving Georgia’s Tourism Growth

Several factors have contributed to Georgia’s tourism success in 2025. One of the primary drivers is the country’s increasing popularity as a regional hub for leisure travel. Georgia’s geographical location at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, along with its visa-free entry for citizens of many countries, makes it an attractive destination for international tourists. Additionally, Georgia’s rich cultural heritage, UNESCO World Heritage sites, diverse landscapes, and warm hospitality have all contributed to the growing influx of visitors.

In recent years, Georgia has also seen a boom in wine tourism, thanks to its long history of winemaking. The country is home to some of the oldest wine traditions in the world, and many tourists are drawn to its wineries and vineyards, particularly in regions like Kakheti. Moreover, Georgia’s growing reputation as an adventure tourism destination, with opportunities for hiking, trekking, and skiing, has attracted tourists seeking outdoor activities.

The government of Georgia has also made significant efforts to promote the country as a tourist destination, launching targeted marketing campaigns and improving infrastructure to make travel more accessible. This includes enhancements to transport networks, including new flights, improved road conditions, and expanded rail services.

Future Prospects for Georgia’s Tourism Industry

As Georgia continues to see strong growth in tourism, the future looks bright for the country’s hospitality and tourism sectors. The increase in international arrivals, particularly from Azerbaijan, Russia, Israel, and Armenia, suggests that Georgia will remain a key destination in the region. With the recovery of global tourism, Georgia is poised to become even more competitive, attracting both regional and international travelers.

The continued growth of tourism to Georgia is expected to have positive ripple effects across other industries, including hospitality, retail, transportation, and local businesses. Additionally, the tourism sector’s success can further strengthen diplomatic and cultural ties between Georgia and its neighboring countries, particularly Azerbaijan.
