Gibraltar might be added to the EU’s borderless Schengen countries. A border-free area is an area that guarantees the 447.7 million EU citizens to move freely. Even non-EU nationals can get access to any area that falls under the Schengen countries.

Gibraltar’s tourism and business minister hopes that it will be a historic new treaty that would allow the citizens to explore the country with additional zest. The gesture is also believed to bring additional benefits to not only Gibraltar but Spain as well.

However, he further said that there will be no concessions on sovereignty, control and jurisdiction. The government will impose taxes on all the hotels and every other place.

He also added that there is a huge requirement for people to go and work there. 16,000 Spaniards have to cross the border to work in Gibraltar’s hospitals, hotels, restaurants and other businesses every day. With this plan, they would not have to bother about passports.

Authority officials state that the Gibraltarians spend a lot of money in the Spanish area. Spanish people are economically dependent on Gibraltar for a number of sectors. Thus, it is highly necessary that travelling between the two countries continues.

Gibraltar’s status as a holiday destination had been boosted by the pandemic. Gibraltar has been added to the green country, it is also the first country to fully vaccinate its citizens.

However, there is still a necessity to boost the hospitality sector in Gibraltar. The country has more capacity than what has been explored. The hotel provision needs to be boosted in the country. Being added to the borderless Schengen area would help the country to get access to maximum tourists.
