Global tourism exhibiting signs of robust recovery despite challenges

International tourism is continuing to exhibit signs of a robust and stable retrieval from the effects of the pandemic in spite of noteworthy increasing financial and geopolitical challenges.

As per the newest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer, global tourism witnessed a strong recovery in the first five months of this year, with nearly 250 million international arrivals. This can be compared to 77 million arrivals from January to May 2021. It means that tourism has improved almost half (46 per cent) of the pre-pandemic levels of 2019.

The UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili said that the rebound of tourism has gathered momentum in several regions of the world, withstanding the threats that came in its way. At the same time, Pololikashvili also advised carefulness due to the monetary headwinds and geopolitical threats which can affect tourism in the remaining months of 2022 and further.

Europe greeted more than four times of international arrivals similar to the first five months of 2021 (+350 per cent).

This was enhanced by robust intra-regional demand and the elimination of travel constraints in an increasing number of countries. Europe witnessed an especially strong performance in April (+458 per cent), which reflects an eventful Easter period.

In the Americas, entrances more than doubled (+112 per cent). Nevertheless, arrivals still largely remain 36 per cent and 40 per cent underneath the levels of 2019 in both regions, respectively.
