As per a UN report, global tourism witnessed a robust recovery in the first five months of this year, with almost 250 million international arrivals, said the latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer.

This is in comparison to 77 million influxes from January to May 2021. It indicates that tourism has improved almost half (46per cent) of the levels before the pandemic.

The UNWTO Secretary-General ZurabPololikashvili said that tourism rebound has gathered momentum in many parts globally, withstanding the obstacles standing in its way. Simultaneously, Pololikashvili has advised cautiousness bearing in mind the economic headwinds and geopolitical threats which can affect tourism during the rest of 2022 and further.

The UN report said that Europe witnessed more than four times of international arrivals similar to the first five months of 2021, due to robust intra-regional demand and elimination of all travel limitations in many countries.

The region witnessed a predominantly healthy performance in April, which reveals an eventful Easter period. In the Americas, influxes more than doubled (+112per cent).

International spending by tourists from France, the US, Germany and Italy is now at 70 per cent to 85 per cent akin to pre-pandemic levels. Spending from India, Saudi Arabia and Qatar has already surpassed the levels of 2019.

Several countries like the Republic of Moldova, Serbia, Romania, Seychelles, Saint Lucia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Albania, North Turkiye, Macedonia, Sudan, El Salvador and Pakistan among others have completely recovered the levels prior to the pandemic.
