A lot of beach shack operators along the Salcete coastline have started shutting down operations much before the specified date of May 31, due to loss of business, a sudden increase in the prices of commodities after the polls and absence of foreign tourists. Many of these shack operatorsshut their businesses in March.

Shack owner Jack Cortes said that while the first two months of this year were pretty good, increase in prices of commodities proved to be catastrophic. “With inflation, I cannot serve the same menu. The rise in the cost of gas cylinders, chicken and other items in the middle of the season caught us unawares and I cannot increase the prices of food all of a sudden,” Cortes said.

Another shack owner said that the code of conduct affected business, since domestic tourists went back earlier due to truncated service timings.

Edwin Baretto said that for the first time, South Goa witnesseda flood of domestic tourists, “We are more accustomed to foreign tourists. Business with charter tourists is far more different for trade — they stay for longer periods, which ensure steady business and money flow,” Baretto said. Baretto is among many shack owners to have closed their operations at Cavelossim. He said that during the operational months, his profits were marginal, hoping for a better season next year.
