Sustainable tourism is the need of the hour for Goa. Tourism is now one of the potential economic growth drivers in Goa, generating new jobs. There is already a high growth in the number of tourist visiting Goa. In the last 4 years alone, tourist numbers soared considerably.
Goa is already coping with a large number of tourists visiting each year. This is posing severe challenges in terms of providing adequate infrastructure, waste management and managing impact on the fragile ecosystems on which local communities depend for their livelihoods.
Due to visitors thronging in large numbers, beaches of Goa are getting affected, garbage piling up and locals getting greedy to make quick bucks by fleecing tourists. None of these would make Goa an attractive tourist destination. Hence, Goa needs to learn from Portugal and initiate a sustainable tourism plan to help grow tourism and keep its environment safe and welcoming for visitors.
