In order to promote tourism in Goa, the Selaulim dam and its surroundings will be cleaned up and made more attractive, proposed water resources minister Subhash Shirodkar on Sunday, as per an article published by Times of India.
“New cottages will be built by the Goa Tourism Development Corporation,” TOI quoted him as saying.
He added, “I have plans of introducing water sports facilities at Pajimol, Sanguem. I also wish to make a garden of fountains at Pajimol, apart from the garden of trees and flowers.”
He was speaking following the beginning of the Selaulim Dam’s illumination as part of the local Amrit Mahotsav festival.
Shirodkar claimed that Sanguem is blessed with nature’s wealth and that more than a lakh people visited the botanical garden and Selaulim Dam last year.
“Goans often think of going to Shimla or Kashmir on a holiday. In my view, Sanguem is at least half as beautiful as Kashmir during the rains,” Shirodkar said.
He said that the water resources department would work to improve the Selaulim dam’s water storage capacity by focusing on efficient water management, so that the water stored there lasts all the way through June, July, and August.
Subhash Phal Dessai, a Sanguem MLA and minister of social welfare, emphasized the importance of expanding the Selaulim dam’s water storage capacity while accompanying Shirodkar there. For this end, he advised that the department take on the task of desilting the reservoir.
“Apart from strengthening the dam, its storage capacity also needs to be increased,” Phal Dessai told Shirodkar.
“Siltation in the dam’s reservoir over the past 40 years has affected its storage capacity.department take up the work of desilting of the reservoir for this purpose.
“Apart from strengthening the dam, its storage capacity also needs to be increased,” Phal Dessai told Shirodkar.
“Siltation in the dam’s reservoir over the past 40 years has affected its storage capacity. Half of Goa’s population is dependent on Selaulim dam for its requirements of drinking water. Even if 10% desiltation is carried out, the storage capacity will increase to an amount sufficient for the water to last for another one month.”
According to Phal Dessai, the projected Kunbi Handloom and Crafts Village, which would be built near Pajimol, would provide tourists with a glimpse into the rich culture and tradition of Goa. Additionally, he noted, the projected wellness center in the area around the dam will increase medical tourism in the region.
