Goa Tourism bans single-use plastic items

 Tuesday, July 23, 2019

Recently, Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) decided to ban the use of single-use plastic items, such as plastic glasses, bottle cups, etc. from its hotels and headquarters with immediate effect. This means that if you book your stay with GTDC hotels, you will also be helping responsible tourism. However, this move comes in a bid to achieve the target that the state government has of making the state plastic-free by 2022.

Last year, the state pledged to be free of single-use plastic for its New Year’s resolution; following it, the state government is now taking proactive steps to achieve its target of limiting plastic usage in the state.

Speaking on the issue, GTDC Chairman Dayanand Sopte said that the decision of eliminating plastic items across the state will go a long way in contributing toward cleaner and greener Goa. Quite evidently, growing plastic waste has become one of the major issues that almost all the states are facing.; therefore, it has become imperative to seek solutions.

Plastic bottles contribute to around 20 per cent of pollution in the oceans, and also make for one of the major items used in the tourism industry. Now, in accordance with the decision, beverages will be served in glasses and paper cups. Water filters and dispensers will also be installed in all the hotels and offices, so that the use of plastic bottles is limited.
