Goa willing to attract high-spending tourists

Instead of focusing on numbers, Goa’s tourism sector is willing to attract high-spending tourists said the newly-appointed minister for tourism and information technology Rohan Khaunte.

Khaunte said that Goa needs to bring all stakeholders from the tourism sector and prepare a proper roadmap for making Goa one of the top tourist destinations in India!

The minister said that in spite of being a major revenue earner, Goa’s tourism sector didn’t receive the attention that it needs. To quote Khaunte, “When in the opposition, I had said that tourism needs a proper roadmap if it is to go ahead. A clear focus needs to be there on quality tourism instead of quantity. We have to start talking about areas that we have never touched.”

Khaunte said that Goa’s heritage, culture and backwaters need to be traveled and promoted.

“I will sit with the chief minister and decide on the priorities. The stakeholders are the main bread earners for the state and we need to work with them. Some reforms are also required,” Khaunte said.

“As the IT minister, I got to work under Parrikar and a lot was done for the IT sector. We created policies for IT, startups, industries and we started the revolution. Through IT we were channeling a lot of energies to stop brain drain. I have the opportunity to complete the vision that Parrikar had. It is an opportunity to meet the expectations of the youth who felt the policies will help the state,” the minister added.
