Google recently called off one of its most important events, the Google I/O Conference that takes place every year in Mountain View, California. The cancellation happened in light of the recent coronavirus outbreak all across the globe. The event was scheduled to take place in May 2020 attracts thousands of visitors from around the globe.
Google cancelled the event to prevent the gathering of attendees and employees travelling from different countries of the world in one place. The multinational tech giant mentioned that they have temporarily restricted international employee travel. They have also advised employees who are currently travelling to return to their respective home. Previously, Google restricted travel in several countries majorly affected by the deadly Covid-19 virus, like China, South Korea, Japan, Iran and Italy.
A Google spokesperson said in a recent press statement that Google’s physical event in Shoreline Amphitheatre has been cancelled in light of the concerns related to coronavirus around the globe. The company finalized its decision in accordance with health guidance from CDC, WHO and other health authorities. However, Google has decided to explore new ways to connect with its developer community in the forthcoming weeks. They will also continue enhancing Google I/O and updating the Google I/O website.
Google has notified attendees and visitors about the cancellation. The company has also confirmed a refund of tickets to all attendees who made a purchase.
Google I/O is the company’s highly immersive event that including thousand of demonstrations from attendees coming from different corners of the world. In the past year, the event welcomed nearly 7,000 visitors or attendees. Google turns out to be the biggest name who joins the chain of companies cutting down travel and cancellation of events and conferences to avoid mass gathering and global travel.
Travel restrictions and event cancellations continue to have harsh effects on the travel and tourism sector. Airlines, Cruise Lines and the Hotel Industry have all taken a major hit in the past few weeks.
