Authorities in Greece have announced that they expect to welcome almost one million tourists to the country’s airports in the first week of August alone.

In this regard, the Minister of Tourism Vassilis Kikilias said that in July, incoming international flights exceeded 950 thousand per week.

According to the minister, the accommodation turnover in May has increased, thus passing half a billion euros – €26 million more than in May 2019.

In addition, the turnover of businesses in the catering sector has increased by €40 million compared to the same period of 2019. These figures show, in practice, that money from tourism flows directly into the real economy.

This is very important to support the average Greek business, the workers in the sector and all those professions connected – directly or indirectly – with our tourism product, from hotels and accommodation, trade, the primary sector and our farmers, to the construction industry, he pointed out.

According to him, among the most favourite destinations for visitors, besides the airports of Athens and Thessaloniki, are the islands of the southeast Aegean and the Cyclades, Crete and Corfu.

Minister Kikilias also referred to the strategy of extending the tourist season implemented in the fall of 2021 and the strong interest of large tour operators from Northern Europe – especially from Germany – for special competitive packages for citizens of Northern Europe who want to visit Greece.

They invite all Nonrth Europeans, Scandevians and Germans as well who wish to spend the difficult winter in Greece due to energy crisis. Mild climate, organised hotel business and shops of health interest, cutting edge infrastructure and a unique experience are all that work as the driving force behind alluring tourists to visit Greece.

Kikilias also added that the initiative, which is related to the extension of the tourist season, is a great added value in income for local communities and supports businesses and workers in the tourism industry.

Previously, Greece has confirmed that 2022 is proving to be a great year for the country’s tourism sector, revealing that tourism arrivals and revenues have increased in many parts of the country.

As a result of the close Greek-American relations, the arrivals of American tourists in Greece have increased by 50 per cent compared to 2019.
