Greece has just issued permits to place two floating facilities in the waters of Corfu and Skopelos, defining a crucial strategy of improving the country’s maritime packages and providing gateway access to favorite vacation spots. The proposed floating platforms are seasonal structures providing a place to dock and launch motorized and nonmotorized marine recreational vehicles. The plan is also hoped to stimulate tourism in these areas through more convenient access to the waterfront, and to enhance safety and ease in the movement of boats. This comes as part of continuing efforts by Greece to develop its marine infrastructure and expand its tourism industry.
Permits involving the construction of mobile platforms in two important regions of the sea in Greece, namely Corfu and Skopelos, were recently signed off by local authorities. This is a key step in the effort to improve the marine infrastructure for the increased demand in recreational boating and better access and safety of our water’s edges. Such facilities are intended for temporary seasonal purposes and will be a significant asset for local tourism and boat related activities.

At Corfu island, the General Secretariat of Ports, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries has approved the placement of floating platform within the marine area of Agios Stefanos, Sinia. The seasonable and season room, having a total area of 23.99 m2 (square meters), is permitted to be used for not more than 9 months. The platform is intended to be used as an embarkation and parking zone for marine recreational vehicles such as paddlin motorboards as well as other known means of marine propulsion. The project is set to meet growing demand for marine leisure in the area, particularly as marine tourism becomes increasingly important to Corfu. By providing a dedicated space where you can dock and launch, the platform aims to decrease harbor traffic, increase water safety, and provide a structured setting for individuals to enjoy the water.
The works also comprise a floating access catwalk of ca. 3.60 m2, to ensure a safe traffic to and from the landing stage. That catwalk will take visitors from the platform to land in order to facilitate a gentle transition from the docks for visitors, including those who are anchoring their pleasure boats. The floating access bridge shall be the principle access, unless the appropriate Port Authority determines that a different approach is more appropriate in light of circumstances particular to the location. This is a critical aspect, because this guarantees that visitors, regardless of safe and easy access to the platform, including in high traffic periods and during periods of inclement weather.

Installing floating platforms in Corfu is a step toward more modern and efficient marine infrastructure as a response to the increasing demand of both local residents and visitors. The system is expected to bring multiple benefits to the community, especially with regard to marine tourism, one of the main pillars of the island economy. This will also reduce congestion at the current docking spots, making more room for boats and lessens the chances of accidents or damages due to narrow docking areas.
Meanwhile, in Skopelos the local council has also agreed to let activity start on floating pontoons infront of the ADRINA RESORT hotel on the mean side of the island of Panormos. The favorable opinion came after thorough examinations by 1st Port Authority of Skopelos. The waterfront infrastructure which will be installed in the waters adjacent to the hotel is intended to increase accessibility to the hotel’s shore front and offer better services to hotel guests, as well as to create a better-of-a-kind environment for visitors.

It was an important criterion for the development of these platforms that the installation would not interfere with port services, nor the shipping operation. Skopelos First Port Authority who declared that the geographical limits used by the project were not inconsistent to those defining the coastline, beach and land-sea zones of the port. The platforms will also not interfere with access to popular local and tourist Panormos-Milia beaches nearby. This forward planning guarantees the expansion will not disrupt the day to day operations of the port ensuring the safety and convenience of maritime traffic and visitors to the area.
The construction of these floating platforms will also help the easy passage and mooring of ships in the area. The platforms will create extra room for boats to park or launch, which will reduce the amount of similar traffic in the Panormos region, where boating is in high demand. In addition, the platforms would provide added safety to maritime activities in the area, with clearly marked places for vessel docking and ensuring that ships mooring there do not interfere with one another, or create obstacles in crowded waters.
It’s not only a good idea to improve our marine infrastructure but it is also a boost to make Skopelos more attractive for tourists. The ADRINA RESORT is an important tourism bearing point in the region, which will profit directly from the facilities. The floating resort stations may provide for low impact way to gain good access to the hotel’s waterfront, making the visit more enticing to potential hotel users who are partial to water activities. This can only make the tourism sector in Skopelos bigger and better, more tourists visiting the island, thus reviving the local economy.
The project is also in accordance with the holistic Greek approach to upgrade its coastal and marine environment. Floating platforms are an eco-friendly and versatile, and yet also a very flexible answer to growing tourists and leisure sailors, especially in places like Corfu, or Skopelos, where the coastline is rocky and often lacking in infrastructure. The use of floating structures enables the government to offer more services without harming the environment, which can maintain the aesthetic appearance and ecological balance of these beautiful sites.
Two floating quays – one in Corfu and another in the island of Skopelos – have been granted permits in Greece in effort to improve maritime infrastructure in a bid to increase touristic inflows by offering easy access to the waterfront and boost recreational boating. This is expected to enhance the visitor experience and improve vessel movement in these well-used areas.
Finally, the floating Platforms have been approved, a giant developmental step for the local communities and the tourism of Corfu and Skopelos. These havens will be key assets in the practice of recreational boating, help to make tourist locations easily accessible, and promote safe and organized maritime activities. And with an eye on keeping residents and visitors at the helm, these platforms are ready to help the coast as we know it in these legendary Greek locations.
