Greece will welcome 1 million tourists a week as stated by tourism minister Vassilis Kikilias in a recent interview.

He underlines the importance of the tourism industry as it drives Greek economy in regard to the arriving winter.

Kikilias also said that this year the tourism sector demonstrated its significant role not only by strengthening national economy but also by offering support in very trying situations.

He claimed the ministry’s “hard work” and stakeholders of travel and tourism for Greek tourism’s unprecedented performance.

The country boasts its excellent entrepreneurs who are offering high level services to the travellers with effort, ingenuity and passion. This will help upgrade Greek tourism.

On the back of July, Greece will expect approximately 1 million tourists a week. This records more than 900,000 traffic every week.

The South Aegean Region has already surpassed its pre-pandemic levels by 20%, 3 million visitors and 17,500 international flights.

Some destinations managed to level up their traffic to the 2019 numbers. They dealt with challenges such as the Russia Ukraine war and inflationary pressures with targeted planning, timely interventions and teamwork.

There has been a dynamic return of the UK, the US, German and the Scandinavian markets. Arrivals from these markets increased in June by 50% over that in 2019.

The “dynamic return” of the market has been possible due to availability of more direct flights.

Additionally, the Australian market improved by 32% and Israeli market by 24%. This year Greece has been designated as the best destination for travellers from France and Israel. It is in the list of the very high preference of tourists from the Balkans and one among the top 3 positions in Scandinavia and Germany.

Some of the lesser known destinations that have been promoted are Lastoria, Limnos, Nafpaktos, Kikilias. Added to this list are Crete, Rhodes and Kos that are designated as ideal destinations for the senior visitors during winter.

One of the biggest bets of the Greek tourism industry was to extend the tourist season surpassing the summer months when conventionally the travellers throng at these places in thousands.

Although they do not have indications, but evidences show that the tourist season has already extended.

The tourist season started earlier this year from the commencement of March. With 63 direct flights per week from the US and cruise ship operations that started early.

The cruise ship arrivals have reached 10 months operations and they are looking forward to take it up to 12 months.
