In 2020, theGoa government had laid downrulesbanning any audio system from being rented out or installed anywhere in Goa for any government or non-government purpose if such a system does not have a sound limiter.

However, last month at a meeting of the Goa state pollution control board (GSPCB), members raised objections regarding the regulations, saying that this may be prove damaging to Goa’s tourism sector.

Theserulesare applicable for audio systems used for all outdoor events. “On perusal of the noise rules, the members stated that this will cause hindrance to the tourism industry, which is still to recover after Covid. Further, there will be a lot of delay in processing applications, as it will have to be routed to the collector and to the GSPCB and to the department of environment and climate change, etc.,” said the minutes of the GSPCB meeting.

The board has decided to inform the state department regarding environment and climate change that if the GSPCB wouldmonitor noise levels, then the fees will need to be fixed according to the guidelines of the central pollution control board.

As per the state government notification, areas across Goashould be categorized into industrial, commercial, residential areas and silence zones.
