The Goa Tourism Development Corporation has launched “Monsoon Trekking” programme for luring tourists in neighborhood areas. The GTDC chairman and Sanvordem MLA Dr. Ganesh Gaonkarwhile addressing the launchingoccasion at TambdiSurla in South Goa said that this programme will improve the economy and will creatework for the local people. In excess of eight million tourists visit Goa each year, and a majority of themfavor “sun, sand and sea” for enjoying their stay. However now, the Goa government is also concentrating on neighborhood tourism.

Gaonkar saidthat there are a lot of things which one cannot get to see on the beaches. Here, in the unspoiled (neighborhood), one can breathepure air free of cost. On the contrary, one needs to pay for something on the beaches.

Gaonkaralso guaranteed tourists of harmlesswalking. He said that safety of the tourists is of highest importance.

The notion of ‘AtithiDevoBhava’ (a guest is equal to God) would carry a lot of meaning in the seaside state, and this “Monsoon Trekking” programme will be stretchedto other areas as well. It will also take place at Dudhsagar waterfall, said Gaonkar. He said that tourist guides will get trained by the GTDC and the Forest Department and only specialized guides will be permitted to go along withthe tourists. The first series of monsoon trekking has started.
