In spite of having the longest coastline in India with numerous beaches suitable for coastal and adventure sports, Gujarat did not find a mention in the list of coastal and adventure tourism circuits upheld by the Center.

This came to the forefront when Narhari Amin, Gujarat BJP MP asked the Union tourism department in the Parliament whether the possibilities of improving water sports have been discovered in the coastal areas of Gujarat.

The Union minister of state tourism opined that several locations in eight states and union territories, including Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Odisha, Goa, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, in addition to Andaman and Nicobar, have been nominated for coastal and adventure sports tourism.

The minister stated that the ministry has identified adventure tourism, which comprises water sports, as a niche tourism invention for boosting India as a year-round destination. To position India as a favored place for adventure tourism worldwide, the ministry has framed a National Strategy for Adventure Tourism.

A National Board for Adventure Tourism that comprises representatives from the central and state government organizations and industry shareholders has been established as well, said the minister.

The Centre has funded a total of Rs. 631 crore to the designated states for the growth and advertising of coastal and adventure sports tourism.

The Center has said that Gujarat has not been nominated as a destination state for Ayush and medical tourism.
