Tourists are defying the freezing temperatures to visit the iconic St. Sophia Cathedral in Harbin, the capital of northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province. This century-old Byzantine masterpiece, blanketed in snow, has become a favorite spot for visitors to capture memorable photographs.
Known as the “Ice City,” Harbin has cemented its reputation as a premier winter destination in China, attracting a global audience. This season, the city is witnessing a surge in international travelers, drawn by its rich history and enchanting winter landscapes.
For Nadia Jovita Injilia Riso, a tourist from Indonesia, visiting the St. Sophia Cathedral was like a long-cherished dream coming true. It was amazing to see such a beautiful Western-style building in China, with people dressed as princes and princesses, which felt like traveling through a time tunnel, she said.
While wandering down Central Street, the iconic pedestrian hub of Harbin, Riso paused to relish the enchanting tunes of a harpist performing from a balcony. She didn’t miss the chance to indulge in the city’s famous local ice cream, adding a sweet touch to her stroll.

“Harbin is famous for its winter tourism and ice sports, but my trip here has been full of unexpected surprises. The melodies, the food and the welcoming locals have left an unforgettable impression,” she said.
Riso shared that she had already explored the indoor ice-and-snow exhibits at Harbin Ice-Snow World, one of China’s most renowned winter attractions. Now, she is eager to experience the thrill of the outdoor Super Ice Slide. “This is a very interesting place because you can make big ice sculptures into very interesting things.”

During the previous winter, Harbin Ice-Snow World became a sensation on Chinese social media, reflecting the nation’s increasing enthusiasm for winter tourism and sports.
This winter, the Harbin Ice-Snow World has reclaimed its status as a major crowd-puller. The newest iteration of the world’s largest ice-and-snow theme park drew an astounding 62,000 visitors on its opening day.

“Everything is a great experience because Indonesia is a tropical country and we don’t have snow,” Riso said, adding that the Harbin Ice-Snow World is on a friend’s wish list, and she will recommend it to her, as well as other friends.
For Moo Swee Ming, part of a 16-member tour group from Malaysia, the ice and snow attractions are an unmissable highlight.
“For first-time visitors here, it’s a must to experience the icy world of snow and ice. It’s a rare opportunity,” said Moo, adding that what the ice and snow tourism of Heilongjiang attracts them most are the “Snow Town” in the city of Mudanjiang and the ice sculptures on Central Street and in the Harbin Ice-Snow World in Harbin.
Harbin’s distinctive allure has made it an increasingly popular destination for travelers exploring China.
Data from the Harbin immigration inspection station reveals that as of December 19, Harbin Taiping International Airport processed 136,000 inbound and outbound international tourists this year, reflecting a remarkable 181% year-on-year growth.
With China’s 240-hour visa-free transit policy in place and the highly anticipated 2025 Harbin Asian Winter Games on the horizon, the city is set to welcome even more global visitors this winter season.
Wang Hongxin, director of Harbin’s culture, radio, television and tourism department, said the city is working to enhance the overall tourist experience by improving dining, accommodation, transportation, shopping and entertainment through the latest technologies.
Harbin is creating a series of new attractions and landmarks, offering global tourists a feast of ice-and-snow tourism, Wang added.
