The 20 millionth passenger of the year visited Helsinki Airport on December 14th. The airport has already crossed last year’s record of 18.9 million passengers. They are expecting 21 million passengers by the time curtains fall on 2018. The current development programme of Euro 1 billion helps the airport to serve up to 30 million passengers a year.

Air travel via Helsinki Airport has been growing rapidly over the past few years. Joni Sundelin, Director of Helsinki Airport said that it is a momentous occasion for Helsinki Airport and the entire Finnish aviation industry.

The airport was expecting to reach the mark of 20 million passengers in 2020; however they crossed that milestone in December 2018 itself.  The volume of international transit traffic is increasing rapidly. The majority of traffic is still within Europe, but Asian transit traffic is also on the rise.

Pia Inhila is the 20 millionth passenger of Helsinki Airport who is flying to Shanghai with Finnair.

As per Sundelin, responsibility is a key factor in the growth of Helsinki Airport. Helsinki Airport is already a carbon neutral airport. They use renewable energy and fuels and compensate for other emissions.

Several development programmes at Helsinki Airport are on the anvil in 2019.
