The tourism sector is gradually emerging out of the shadow of Covid. This year, tourist arrivals in Himachal Pradesh are expected to be close to the annual average of 1.70 crore, which was witnessed before the beginning of the pandemic.

Based on data gathered by the Department of Tourism and Civil Aviation, this year, a total of 1.27 crore tourists visited Himachal up to October 31. Nevertheless, only 23,283 foreigners visited the state.

7,511 foreign tourists visited Shimla, which is the highest number. It was followed by 4,693 in Kangra, 3,736 in Lahaul and Spiti and 3,486 in Kullu. In 2019, a total of 3.82 lakh foreign tourists visited Himachal. In 2018, 3.56 lakh visitors came to Himachal; hence, their arrival is yet to gain momentum this year.

In 2019, 1.72 crore tourists had visited Himachal. However, their number dropped to 32.13 lakh in 2020, on account of the Covid outbreak, with all types of travel, both national and international, coming to a complete stop. In 2021, the condition improved somewhat and 56.37 lakh tourists came to the state. So far this year, 1.27 crore tourists visited the state. A big rush is predictable around Christmas and New Year’s eve. The number is expected to surge around 1.70 lakh, which is a normal trend for Himachal.
