The South Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO) and the Office of the WHO Representative of the South Pacific has signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to strengthen the travel and tourism industry in the Pacific regions.
The MoU seeks to make strong and existing collaborations on healthy workplaces for staff in the industry and for the industry to provide accessible facilities for employees and visitors with disabilities.
World Health Organisation director Pacific Technical Support Dr Corinne Capuano said their colleagues in the tourism industry were in a position to address the growing demands for healthy tourism options.
Dr Capuano also said that in the Pacific, the tourism sector is a big employer. Eliminating exposure to tobacco smoke in public places results in a healthier and, therefore, more productive workforce.
The Head of SPTO Chris Cocker thanked World Health Organisation for the historic partnership and said they looked forward to working with them for the betterment of tourism in the South Pacific region.
