Ho Chi Minh City all set to revitalize its tourism industry

For 2021, one of the top priorities of Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City will be supporting the hard-hit tourism, as per Phan Thi Thang, the Deputy Chairwoman of the city People’s Committee.

Thang while attending a recent meeting with the Department of Tourism and travel agencies has said that in 2021, tourism should come up with new signature tourism products. Nguyen Anh Hoa, the director of the Department of Tourism, has explained that tourism promotions were expressing eagerness among the local residents to buy tours at prestigious service providers in order to stay away from low-quality products.

She emphasized that local tourism businesses health in the initial three months of the year was “very weak”. Hoa suggested that the government continue tax payment extensions and tax reductions for value-added tax and corporate income tax.

She also said that businesses should attempt availing preferential loans and restructure their repayment periods.
In the Ho Chi Minh City, about 90% of small and medium-sized tourism businesses and inbound travel agencies for the time being have stopped their operations due to the impact of the pandemic, the department said.

At this moment, merely, 40-50% of local tour guides and 10% of foreign tour guides have jobs. All of them are official staff of the remaining travel agencies, while freelance tour guides have started working in other sectors.

Lai Minh Duy, vice-chairman of the HCM City Tourism Association, stated that he was quite anxious about the small number of tourism agencies here.

“Tourists from the central and northern regions have paid a lot of attention to new destinations, so the city should promote attractive destinations in city districts, especially in Thu Duc City and Can Gio District,” he said.
