In order to draw more tourists and to improve the overall ambience, Hogenakkal falls and its water spread in Dharmapuri district is being cleaned.

The bathing area under the falls would be improved; the water spread area would be restored to its natural condition, and water course would be regulated to stop stagnation. Steps will be taken to prevent people from dumping plastic and clothes near the falls.

The falls received 52 lakh tourists every year in pre-Covid-19 times. Since the bathing area is slippery and unsafe for visitors, a safe spot is for the same is being planned. Tamil Nadu Tourism is also planning to offer training in naturopathy to masseurs attending to visitors.

Tourism secretary B Chandra Mohan said, “We have told them to give a concept report based on which a study will be commissioned to be completed in three months. The clean-up has already started with the help of volunteers from NGOs and others.”

The authorities will create a separate bathing ghat for funeral rites and will also provide containers for them to abandon clothes and other items after the rituals are over. These clothes often get stuck in bushes and rocks and affect free flow of water.

Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) has added suites to the 30 rooms at its hotel at Hogenakkal.
Sriharan Balan of Madura Travels said that when travel restarts, the first set of travelers will be those who prefer to drive down. “People will use their cars and motorcycles. Hogenakkal will benefit from this,” he said.
