Hondurus is keen to boost tourism in ‘bitcoin valley’

Now, in the streets of bitcoin valley, people can pay for a slushie with cryptocurrency. It’s a project in the Honduran tourist enclave of Santa Lucia. Through this project the country has captured the trend of digital currency.


Around 20 minutes from the capital, Tegucigalpa is the small town in the mountains and has fast become a bitcoin city of late. Big and small business owners are fast getting used to managing cryptocurrencies as payment, anticipating attracting more tourism.


The manager of the Los Robles shopping square, Cesar Andino, said that this step will unlock greater number of opportunities and draw more people who want to use cryptocurrency. At first, the bitcoin valley project aims 60 businesses to get trained and take on cryptocurrencies to promote their services as well as products, hoping to spread these practices to greater number of enterprises in adjoining areas.


The Blockchain Honduras organization, Guatemalan cryptocurrency exchange consortium Coincaex, the Technological University of Honduras and the Santa Lucia City Government had jointly set up this effort.


Ruben Carbajal Velazquez, a professor at the Technological University, said that the community of Santa Lucia will be tutored to make use of and handle cryptocurrencies, applying them in different forms of regional businesses and generating cryptotourism. As some countries in Latin America are exploring the potential of cryptocurrencies.


El Salvador in September 2021 had adopted bitcoin as legal tender after bringing in its own “bitcoin beach” in El Zonte.
