Hong Kong tourism and businesses suffer due to recent protests

Published on : Saturday, August 24, 2019

With travelers turning their faces from Hong Kong due to the recent chaos, ordinary Hong Kong shopkeepers and those working in the tourism industry said that the unrest has taken a major toll on their source of income.

The summer season from June to August used to be the peak season for Hong Kong tourism. However, with the protests, summer boom has turned into a chilly winter in Hong Kong.

Many businesses have taken a turn for the worse this summer, with the number of tour groups dropping from eight in June to four in July. Many tour groups are totally absent in August.

Currently, more than 20 countries and regions have issued travel advisories for Hong Kong following the unrest.

The sharp drop in tourist number has affected many industries in Hong Kong, including the cab business.

Weeks-long violent protests have also taken its toll on the Hong Kong retail industry.
