Houston Airports achieved record-breaking passenger traffic this summer, driven by innovative upgrades at IAH and HOU, improving convenience and overall travel experience.

This summer, Houston Airports experienced an unprecedented rise in passenger traffic while launching several innovative projects aimed at elevating the travel experience at both George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and William P. Hobby Airport (HOU).

The summer of 2024 proved to be historic, with Houston Airports accommodating a record 19 million travelers between Memorial Day and Labor Day, marking a 7% increase compared to 2023. This growth highlights the city’s rising popularity as a destination for both business and leisure, bolstered by new airlines and expanded flight offerings at Bush and Hobby airports.

The summer flight schedule at Bush Airport kicked off on May 23, adding over 60 new daily flights. To manage the influx of passengers, Houston Airports introduced proactive measures, including 600 additional parking spaces at IAH’s Terminal C/D/E Garage, ensuring ample capacity during peak periods. However, the focus extended beyond logistics, with efforts aimed at improving the passenger experience.

Houston Airports also announced a $30 million restroom renovation project for both Bush and Hobby airports. Meanwhile, CLEAR, an authorized TSA PreCheck enrollment provider, expanded its services to Bush and Hobby airports, making TSA PreCheck enrollment and renewals more accessible for passengers.

Another significant advancement was the rollout of a cashless parking system, now available at Hobby’s Red and Blue Garages and ecopark 2 at Bush Airport. This system utilizes License Plate Recognition (LPR) technology, speeding up entry and exit for vehicles with parking reservations. With Near-Field Communication (NFC) technology, contactless payments via digital wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay have further streamlined the process. The transition to a completely cashless parking system will be completed by May 2025.

One of the major improvements this summer was the introduction of the Active Loading policy at IAH, which eased curbside congestion, particularly during the July 4th holiday when 1.9 million passengers traveled through Houston’s airports. Additional Landside Agents and law enforcement officers helped minimize traffic backups during this peak period.

July also brought challenges, including Hurricane Beryl, which forced Houston Airports to briefly suspend operations. As employees worked to repair storm damage, passengers faced extended TSA and ticketing lines, along with limited services. Aviation Director Jim Szczesniak urged travelers to remain patient during the recovery process. Shortly after Beryl, a global IT outage disrupted flights, but Houston Airports responded by deploying additional staff and even therapy dogs to ease tensions, transforming a stressful event into a moment of connection.

Amid these challenges, Houston Airports made substantial progress in long-term redevelopment efforts. The opening of a new TSA Recheck area at IAH was the first step in a larger initiative to centralize security checkpoints, improving efficiency for international travelers. As the construction of the new International Central Processor continues, passengers are already reaping the rewards of these advancements.

The lessons learned from the summer surge have not only driven immediate improvements but will also guide future strategies. The challenges highlighted the importance of ongoing infrastructure investment, transparent communication, and unwavering customer service. As Houston Airports looks to the future, the organization remains dedicated to providing a world-class travel experience.
