Salman Rushdie was the latest high-profile victim of attacks at public events when he was stabbed on stage in front of the crowd during a Chautauqua Institution speaking engagement. Stage barriers serve a multitude of purposes and are now an essential piece of event planning gear. Despite being called “stage” barriers, they can be used anywhere there will likely be a lot of people, like in licensed bars at outdoor events. So what can organisers of events do to prevent this from occurring at their events, then? Here are a few of the main explanations for why Stage Security is well-suited to offer top-notch solutions to ensure the security and efficiency of your event.

In order to ensure that everyone can enjoy the event, Stage Security is able to offer a wide range of security options. No matter the size, location, or event logistics of the venue, bespoke solutions are available. The work of Stage Security begins very early on in the relationship with the event planner. It will visit the location to conduct a thorough security audit and identify any potential issues in a report. The company is aware of how crucial it is to stay in constant contact with event organisers, local government officials, pertinent organisations, and the neighbourhood during the preparation phase. Everyone’s worries and troubles about the occasion are appreciated and incorporated to create a successful security plan.

The Rushdie incident a crucial landmark

“The Rushdie attack just continues to serve as more evidence why you cannot take security for granted at events anymore,” said Tyrha M. Lindsey-Warren, managing director, L.A.I. Communications, a strategic communications agency that also produces events. “Last month, at the Cincinnati Black Music Walk of Fame 2022 Induction Ceremony that I produced, we took the time to put a security plan into place with all of our stakeholders, including the Cincinnati police, Hamilton County, and our venue,” she said. The L.A.I. Communications safety plan included “making sure metal detectors were used, and proper personnel to staff them were in place, to manage a 3,000-person audience.” They also discussed properly managing parking since the Cincinnati Reds and two other major events happening simultaneously were all using the same parking garages. “Additionally, we had to have security and other protocols in place for all of our talent who were being inducted into the Cincinnati Black Music Walk of Fame as well as for all of the local, county, and state officials who attended our event,” she said.

Employ these security guidelines for better stage protection

It is advisable to design a thrust so that it does not disrupt good sightlines. Ascertain that such stage layouts don’t create concave trapping places from which audience members are unable to escape. Important exits to the right and left of the stage will be kept clear and accessible in case of an emergency by the installation of a high side-stage barrier to create a sightline blockage. Always have a fence like this for audiences who are standing. To lessen the probability of crowd collapse for major outdoor events, an additional barrier arrangement might be possible. A finger barrier reaching into the audience or a system of numerous barriers could be used for this. To prevent producing trapping spots, careful design is required if a finger barrier is used. Stewards and first responders should be able to access the audience along its length, and the barrier should be able to sustain the same crowd loading as the front-of-stage barrier. If two or three barriers are employed, they should be arranged in a convex curve that faces the audience and have exits on both ends. Stewards and first-aiders will have enough access to the audience along the length of the barriers if a hallway or space is made available behind each curving barrier. The barriers utilised should be able to support the necessary minimum loading.
