Hugh Mackenzie honored with 2023 TIAC lifetime achievement award

The Tourism Industry Association of Canada (TIAC) gratefully honored Hugh Mackenzie with the 2023 TIAC Lifetime Achievement Award, honoring his 43-year career’s remarkable achievements in the Canadian tourism sector.

Beth Potter, President and CEO of TIAC, praised Mackenzie’s unwavering devotion and passion, emphasizing his transformative leadership at Kingston & the Islands Boatlines and his vital involvement in the growth of Wilderness Tours. Mackenzie’s influence went beyond Kingston, with innovative tourism programs and best practices shared across North America.

Mackenzie’s career has been defined by innovation, including the introduction of dinner cruises, the “hop-on, hop-off” Trolley model, and the K-Pass to improve guest experiences. During the epidemic, his influence extended to regulatory activism, guaranteeing government support for the sector. His dedication to talent development is demonstrated via mentorship and support for career paths.

“Hugh’s remarkable career is an inspiration,” Potter said. He has left an everlasting imprint on Kingston’s tourism business and helped to shape its mindset. The TIAC Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023 is well-deserved.”

Mackenzie’s involvement in programs such as Kingston Accommodation Partners and the Municipal Accommodation Tax model demonstrates his dedication to the greater good.
