Hungary has firmly established itself as a key destination for sports tourism, with 2024 marking a significant milestone, especially in the world of running events. Following the success of the 2023 World Athletics Championships, the country hosted the European Orienteering Championships and a variety of major marathons and races in 2024, all of which broke previous international participation records.

A major milestone was the debut of a Netflix commercial series titled Sprint, which spotlighted Budapest’s allure as a sports tourism hub, according to the Oeconomus Economic Research Foundation. Showcasing the iconic venues of the World Athletics Championships alongside the city’s dynamic atmosphere, the campaign highlighted Hungary’s rising status as a leading destination for sports tourism.

Notable events such as the Telekom Vivicittá, Wizz Air Budapest Half Marathon, Ultrabalaton, and Spar Budapest Marathon all achieved record-breaking international participation, marking a significant achievement for Hungary’s sports tourism scene.

Spar Budapest Marathon:
Held in October, the Spar Budapest Marathon drew 30,000 runners, with a record 6,300 international participants from 107 countries. This remarkable turnout led to more than 50,000 overnight stays, emphasizing the significant impact on tourism. It marked the first time since the pandemic that the event surpassed 30,000 runners, reinforcing Budapest’s reputation as a premier global marathon destination.

Ultrabalaton:
In September, the Ultrabalaton race saw over 25,000 participants, including 2,500 teams from 26 countries across Europe, Asia, and North America. This renowned endurance race around Lake Balaton continues to expand year after year, attracting international teams and showcasing Hungary’s stunning natural beauty.

Wizz Air Budapest Half Marathon:
The Wizz Air Budapest Half Marathon, held in early September, saw 13,500 runners, including 3,000 international participants from nearly 30 countries. This event marked a notable surge in attendance compared to previous years, highlighting its growing global appeal.

Telekom Vivicittá:
The Vivicittá festival, held in April, attracted over 23,000 runners across 12 different race categories. With more than 2,200 participants from 102 countries, the festival has evolved into a vibrant international event that promotes cultural exchange while elevating Budapest’s profile on the world sports scene.

Sports tourism is rapidly expanding worldwide, and Hungary’s running events are a prime example of this growth. These events attract not only participants but also their families, friends, and support teams, generating a positive economic ripple effect throughout the local economy. Research indicates that sports tourists are typically well-educated, with above-average incomes and a strong inclination to spend on travel, accommodation, and cultural experiences.

According to research published in Springer’s Sport Economy, such events bring significant benefits to host cities by stimulating local businesses and fostering cultural exchange. The economic impact is especially notable in smaller towns and regions, where the arrival of tourists revitalizes the area.

Hungary’s achievements in 2024 underscore its potential as a leading sports tourism destination in Central Europe. With efficiently organized events, strategic international marketing, and a rich cultural heritage, Hungary provides an exceptional experience for sports lovers.
