Hungary tourism gets back to pre-pandemic levels

In Hungary, the tourism sector has revived totally, just like the pre-pandemic level. This summer, around 16.4 million guest nights were registered, as per the Hungarian Tourism Agency pointed on Monday.


MTU said that this is the same level as the tourism sector had experienced in the summer of 2019.


MTU greeted the fact that domestic tourism in recent years has maintained its momentum. In accommodation facilities, around 10.5 million of the guest nights were spent by the local visitors which are 12 percent more than 2019 summer data.


This summer of 2022, Hungary succeeded in welcoming 2.5 times more international tourists than last year summer, MTU added.


The percentage of foreign visitors in last year was 20 percent in the three June, July and August. In the meantime, in 2022, it increased to 36 percent, accounting for almost 6 million international guest nights.


The well-known tourist attraction, Lake Balaton, in 2022, retained its title as the number one tourist destination, with over 5.4 million guests staying overnight, estimating for 41 percent of total rural accommodation turnover.


Hungarian was the largest proportion of guests in the countryside with 75 percent of total guests. In Budapest this summer, 83 percent of total guests were tourists from abroad. The tourists from Germany, the United States, United Kingdom, Israel, Italy and the Netherlands comprised the largest number of tourists.


Also, MTU mentioned that the rate of general hotel-room occupancy stood at 60 percent on a national scale in the three summer months.
