Hurricane Kay on Thursday made landfall on the Baja California Peninsula in northwestern Mexico. The hurricane has now weakened to a Category One hurricane. It posed a threat of flash floods and destructive waves in the region.

As per the National Hurricane Centre (NHC), the hurricane has a wind speed of around 120 kilometres per hour and is reportedly located around 112 kilometres southeast of Punta Eugenia.

The National Hurricane Centre (NHC) said that the hurricane’s centre was expected to pass over parts of the Baja California peninsula before it weakens to a tropical storm, reported news agency IANS. Authorities in the area which are likely to be affected by the hurricane urged residents to take precautions.

The shelters have been opened in the affected areas to evacuate people to safer locations in case of floods. On Wednesday, heavy rainfall lashed Los Cabos at the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula. Mexico is regularly lashed by storms along the Pacific and Atlantic coasts.

Southern California and Western Arizona regions of the United States are also expected to receive rainfall due to the hurricane. Notably, high-speed winds could aggravate wildfires in Southern California. Notably, the majority of South California has been witnessing severe drought conditions. As per reports, Kay could also come close to Los Angeles. It could be the closest storm to approach the largest United States city in California in the past 50 years.
