Due to the icy conditions, all taxiways and runways at Detroit Metropolitan Airport in Romulus closed at about 20.00 hours. The maintenance crews had actively treated the airfield several hours back. However, the constant rate of precipitation has diluted the de-icing fluid, causing it to be ineffective. Based on the weather forecast, DTW is expected to remain closed overnight. It was expected to reopen at 1 a.m. Wednesday.

Maintenance crews are working to prepare the surfaces to reopen on the airfield. Passengers are advised to contact their airline before reaching the airport. They can also check the status of their flight on the airport’s website.

As per FlightAware.com, the airport had 187 delays and 134 cancellations. A post from the Federal Aviation Administration’s Traffic Control command center said the airport was expected to reopen at 1 a.m. Wednesday.

The icy mix has caused about 1,700 outages in Westland, as per DTE Energy. Power is expected to be restored late Tuesday.

As per the National Weather Service, freezing rain will continue across southeast Michigan. Light snow or sleet mixed with the freezing rain, is expected in the especially around the M-59 corridor.
