The incident, where a young woman camper was killed by a wild elephant at an illegal tent camping site in Wayanad, is indeed a disaster given the rapid increasing of unauthorized camping sites near forest fringes and mountains without proper safety checks.
The lack of proper guidelines and regulatory mechanism to watch over the functioning of such camps has led to surfacing of many unauthorized groups trying to cash in on the newfound fad by offering overnight camping at remote, vantage locations by even taking land on lease. Officials said that most of these camp service providers were functioning without getting permission or license and their promotions were done mostly on social media or online.
Authorities said that there was a big increase in tent camping sites after the pandemic, with visitors looking for cheap accommodation. Even after tourism was restricted in areas like Kurumbalakotta amid the pandemic, unauthorized operators were offering camping in high-altitude destinations.
