Impact of COVID-19 on aviation industry discussed during ATM Virtual

The opening session of ATM Virtual’s inaugural event witnessed discussions on the impact of COVID-19 on the aviation industry and its response to the challenges. Respected aviation expert and Director of JLS Consulting, John Strickland was in conversation with aviation industry veteran, Sir Tim Clark, President, Emirates Airline on the opening day of the virtual event.


Sir Tim Clark outlined the effect of coronavirus on aviation and shared the measures undertaken by Emirates in response to the pandemic. He also mentioned that current situation brought a huge structural change to the industry, something that people have not witnessed before. He also shared that he believes that the global economy is resilient enough to face the trauma if it does not continue for any longer.


He further revealed that things are likely to move back to normalcy during the course of 2021 if people in the industry accept that there is a finite point where everyone will finally see an end to the crisis and make necessary adjustments with lifestyle, business, and travel aspirations. He shared that despite constant monitoring, planning resumption at present would be complicated as countries would not open at a pace like before even though that has gradually started to relax restrictions.


He also said that the future continues to be uncertain to some extent as more clarity on quarantine, flight protocols and handling of passengers at airports is required. He mentioned that the industry is still standing on the very early days of a future recovery. He also outlined the important role of governments around the world in the process of aviation’s recovery. He said that aviation business is in a critical and very fragile state at the moment and requires every help possible to recover.


He concluded providing access, attracting back passengers and resuming flight operations even if in level less than period prior to the pandemic, is necessary to restart the industry and giving it the cash lifelines required at present. Aviation was a recurring theme throughout the three-day virtual event.


The discussion was followed by another session by aviation industry giant Joszef Varadi, CEO, Wizz Air who highlighted the measures implemented by the budget airline that has successfully kept it afloat amidst the coronavirus crisis. In addition, a webinar by data intelligence experts, Cirium, showcased that the power of analytics in supporting business performance.

Cirium’s Paul Trewin and Seera Group’s Data Vice President, Louise Blake took over the webinar on the final day of ATM Virtual focused on the aviation industry and outlined new ideas for incorporating analytics into team performance alongside highlighting the power of analytics by using Cirium’s years of analytical experience.
