In April 2021, the numbers of international tourists have almost tripled compared to the same time in 2020 but were still 35.8% below figures for April 2019.

The data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) shows that in April around 2.32 million international tourists have come to Mexico. It’s a 199% rise compared to just over 777,000 visitors a year before, when majority of the world was going through lockdown.

The 2.32 million figures signify a plunge of 1.3 million compared to April 2019, when 3.62 million foreign tourists visited.

In April, the amount of money that international visitors spent while in Mexico has also went down compared to the same month of 2019, even though the figure was up a whopping 1,548% compared to April 2020.

Inegi data shows that in April, tourists together spent US $1.18 billion, a 37.6% decline compared to the same month two years before when $1.89 billion flowed into the country. International tourists spent just $71.8 million in Mexico in April last year.

Inegi data also shows that in the first four months of 2021, around 8.1 million foreign tourists came to Mexico, placing this year’s visitor numbers on a par with those of eight years ago.
