In eight months, Kashmir tourist inflow reached record height

Kashmir, after three decades, is drawing huge flock of tourists. Experts claim that Kashmir tourism’s golden era has returned, when the place was an immensely popular destination for visitors worldwide. Till August end 2022, a total of 16.84 lakh tourists, including foreigners’ visitors the place, a top Tourism Department stated about the same.


Around 10,500 of the 16.84 lakh tourists were from abroad. He stated that in 2022, 3.65 lakh Amarnath yatris travelled to Kashmir as well. To the total number of visitors, when these figures are added, the Valley has had almost 20.49 lakh tourists.


He stated that for Kashmir, 2 million tourists represented an all-time high and forecasted future growth. The tourist sites like Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg along with Srinagar’s hotels and guesthouses experienced 100 percent occupancy rate.


The occupancy rate in Srinagar, for houseboats was between 70 and 80 per cent. To Kashmir, tourists are rushing back in huge numbers; three years after New Delhi canceled the special status of the region. The sector in recent months, post-COVID, has revived intensely with up to 10,000 people mainly from other areas of India, travelling on up to 100 flights per day to the airport of Srinagar.


The federal government, in the first six months of 2022, reported 10.6 million visitor visits to J&K. The high rush of tourists has bought back smiles to millions of faces of the tourism stakeholders who are confident that the tourist numbers would increase further in the coming months.
