In Goa, beach shacks have started wrapping up before the tourist season ends on May 31 due to a decline in usual business. Most beach shacks in the state stay afloatdue to footfalls from domestic tourists; however, shacks at not-so-popular beaches and located away from main beach entrances have already closed their operations.
Officially, shacks are permitted to remain open till May 31. Although in the past, operators have closed down earlier than usual, the number of shacks closing early this time is more, said Cruz Cardozo, the president of shack owners’ welfare society (SOWS).
“At South Goa beaches, several operators have closed without waiting till May 31. Even operators at Candolim beach have stopped operations and dismantled shacks,” said Cardozo.
Although Goa will still receive domestic tourists throughout May, Inacio Daniel, a shack operator from Arambol said that he has shut operations for the season, since Arambol sees fewer Indian tourists compared to Baga and Calangute, the tourism hotspots forthe domestic tourists.
The charter season, starting very late in the season after the two-year ban on international flights was taken off, abruptly stopped with the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Goa did not receive a single charter flight from the UK, which is its traditional international tourist market.
