In August 2022, over 1.8 million tourists had stayed in accommodation spots all over Portugal. To note, this number was slightly higher than the levels of the pre-pandemic times. As per the National Statistics Institute, in July, the visitor number was 600,000 and this was more than in the previous year when the restrictions related to COVID-19 and limitations still existed.
Besides, in July, the number of arrivals was slightly about 1.78 million recorded in July of 2019. For tourism sector, this was a record year. The tourism sector of the country represented about 15 per cent of the GDP gross prior to the pandemic that started spreading out in early 2020, restricting global travel to the fullest.
Still, in the first seven months of 2022, the total number of foreign visitors was 8.1 million. This was about a million short of the same time of the pre-pandemic levels.
From Spain in July, visitors represented the largest share of total arrivals with 285,900 visitors. It was followed by the United Kingdom and the United States. It has recently marked a huge rush and became Portugal’s main source of tourism.
On the tourism sector, the positive impact and the strong revival have been obvious because of the location of Portugal in Europe’s southern part, which is quite distant from the Ukraine, the war region, so people consider it to be a secure place.
