In Kerala, tourism is coming back to normal bit by bit

In Kerala, tourism is slowly coming back to normal. It also witnessed a pause in tourism after it remained closed for tourists for a couple of months in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic, along with travel restrictions across the country.

Not only in Kerala, situation across India is also improving to some extent with people looking for travel and stepping out of their houses. Tour operators are also saying that the worst is, hopefully, almost over. Hotels and resorts are announcing big discounts with special packages for attracting domestic tourists, since foreigners are passé now. Also, all hopes are pinned on the vaccine which is expected to improve the situation further.

In popular beach destinations like Kovalam, which is situated around 16 kms away from the capital, fishermen have started to clear the beaches by removing their catamarans to facilitate sunbath for tourists. As backwaters, beaches and hill stations are open now for visitors, it is expected that the region will witness a growth in the number of visitors in the coming months.

The Tourism Ministry of Kerala witnessed a footfall of 1.96 crore tourists last year, and the revenue generated was INR 45010 crore. This year, the state was aiming for 8 to 10 per cent increase in tourist footfall, when the COVID pandemic struck, and it all crumbled down. Tourism accounts for approximately 40 per cent of the state’s revenue, which suffered a big jolt this year due to the virus.

Hospitality is a strong sector, and once travelers start their trips again in full confidence, coming back will be faster and quicker.
