In May, revenue in Sri Lankan tourism reaches new height

In May, on an annual basis, the revenue in terms of tourism earning of Sri Lanka witnessed an extraordinary growth of more than 200 per cent. The income reached $131.5 million, as per the recent information from the central bank of the island country.


This remarkable raise happened in spite of the fact that last month is generally considered as an off tourism month in terms of arrival of tourists, Priantha Fernando, Chairman, Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority informed the media on Saturday.


From tourism in May last year, the estimated income was almost $43.5 million, as per the data. The tourism revenue in Sri Lanka for the first five months of this year totaled to almost $827.8 million.


This increase marked a substantial boost of almost 30.4 per cent compared to the same time last year when it stood at $634.6 million, as per the official information.


Also, data showed that in Sri Lanka 524,486 foreign visitors arrived in the first five months of 2023, exceeding 378,521 arrivals recorded a year before, as per the report of the Xinhua news agency.


One of Sri Lanka’s important foreign exchange earners, tourism industry went through major obstructions due to the pandemic and catastrophe related to financial and political condition in the South Asian country.
