On Sunday, the Tourism Ministry of Sri Lanka has declared that diesel vehicles registered with the Tourism Development Authority will be given priority access to fuel at state-owned bus depots in the middle of the continuing dearth of fuel in this island country.

Xinhua news agency quoted local media reports as saying that for this scheme, vehicles that meet the criteria will receive an identity sticker. At a meeting chaired by Minister of Finance, Basil Rajapaksa, this decision was made. It was attended by officials from the Tourism and Transport Ministries. The said meeting was arranged after the reports got flashed that many tourist transporting vehicles were stuck due to fuel shortages across Sri Lanka.

Also, the Tourism Ministry has requested the police authorities to assist the tourist vehicles which got stranded and help the hotels assisting tourists to obtain diesel to run electricity generators.

Since February in Sri Lanka, tourism has been one of the most impacted areas by fuel shortages and electricity cuts.
