India is reviving from pandemic-linked lull period

For some more time, the travel and tourism industry of India will have to depend on domestic demand, as there’s still dearth of inbound tourists at par with pre-pandemic level.

But, after the Omicron wave at the beginning of the year, domestic travel demand has rebounded, as per Booking.com, a hotel and flight reservations website.

Santosh Kumar, country manager for India, Sri Lanka, the Maldives and Indonesia, at Booking.com, said that India is reviving from the pandemic-linked lull. Now people in India have just started return to their offices. This trend of taking more regular staycations, vacations, and spending more on experiences, is something that they have not seen to decrease. He said that that’s reflected in their business uptick along with the market. More than before, India has definitely become a priority market for them, he said.

While cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi, and Chennai continue to be on the travel list, while this festive season, cities like Udaipur, Goa, Jaipur, Puducherry, Ooty, Amritsar, and Manali are the top booked destinations by travelers, he said.

Regardless of some of the headwinds that they have experienced like the price rise of food and fuel or in some places, how hotel average daily rates like non-metro cities have risen considerably, demand has been very strong. And it continues to be even stronger, he said. He said that India has been very self-sustaining in this regard of domestic travel.
