In Indonesia, the state government will promote cooperation with Pekanbaru and Dumai with a mission to fill vacancies in the hospitality and health tourism sectors of Melaka.

Datuk Muhammad Jailani Khamis, the State tourism, heritage and culture committee chairman, explained that these two sectors were witnessing a dearth of workforce, mainly among locals.

“We have four private hospitals and Melaka is known for health tourism and many hotels.”

“However, we face problems as the local workforce shun the minimum wage.

“So, one solution is to provide opportunities for Indonesians to undergo their internship in Melaka, maybe for six months in both sectors,” he informed Bernama after officiating the Melaka Coffee Festival 2022 here today.

He also stated that with representatives of relevant agencies in Indonesia, the support would be discussed during his week-long visit to Jakarta, which started from today.

The discussion would include the steps related to post-Covid-19 to revive the sector in Melaka and Indonesia, especially in the health tourism sector.

Muhammad Jailani stated in another development that tourism industry players in the state were reminded to constantly put into practice the standard operating procedure (SOP) to stop Covid spread.

“Ttourist arrivals to Melaka have increased, especially in the first month of this year, but we also need to ensure that the SOP is complied with as the daily number of Covid-19 cases is increasing,” he added.
