Indonesia tourism –A great option for village women

For women, tourist villages provide opportunities to earn more money for their family and the local communities without going out from their home.

In Indonesia, women sending money to their family have been called as heroes which in return has boosted foreign exchange of the country. However, reports of abuse by foreign employers continue. In Saudi Arabia, the execution of two maids from Indonesia led to a complete stop on sending women as domestic workers to 21 countries in 2015. However, on July 2022, a provisional ban was instituted against sending Indonesian housemaids to Malaysia.

The bustling tourist villages of Indonesia provide a safer way to make a living.

In the agricultural sector of Indonesia, compared to men, rural women earn less and patriarchy is perpetuated. As women are involved in agricultural production in an active basis like weeding and harvesting, they fall short of their physical strength in terms of land clearing and plough. Women take on more unpaid household work like preparation of food and daily chores and they take care of livestock.

The tourism village program or desa wisata of Indonesia is rising as an option where women of the village can choose to generate an income.

The Banyuwangi Regency of East Java Province, a tourist-popular place, is home to people with some of the lowest monthly wages in the region. However it’s known as the centre of Osing traditional culture as well.
