The Indonesian Ministry of Tourism has welcomed Indonesia AirAsia new direct flight route from Adelaide to Denpasar, Bali, which officially began on June 26, 2025. The Tourism Ministry is hopeful that the new route will significantly improve international tourist access, especially from Australia, to Bali and other prime destinations across Indonesia.
Ni Made Ayu Marthini, the Deputy for Marketing at the Tourism Ministry, highlighted that Indonesia AirAsia is a strategic partner of the Ministry, especially with its expanded network connecting Australia and Indonesia. The airline’s new Adelaide-Denpasar route complements the already established Darwin-Denpasar route, launched earlier in March 2025, making this the fourth route between Australia and Bali by Indonesia AirAsia.

Marhthini emphasized that this route will not only promote Bali as a leading destination but also help expand Australian tourists’ access to other key Indonesian locations. “We hope this new international route will encourage the growth of tourist visits to Indonesia, particularly to priority destinations such as Bali, Lombok, Labuan Bajo, Medan, and Yogyakarta, which are part of the country’s sustainable tourism plan,” she said.
The first flight on the Adelaide-Denpasar route, QZ421, landed at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport on June 26, 2025. This flight will operate four times a week—on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays—giving Australian tourists greater flexibility in travel.

Through Bali’s hub, Australian visitors will have the opportunity to continue their journey to other fascinating destinations within Indonesia. This includes iconic spots such as Jakarta, the nation’s bustling capital and center of government activities, and Labuan Bajo, known as the gateway to the Komodo National Park, home to the famous Komodo Dragons.
With the new route, Adelaide and its surrounding regions are expected to see a rise in the number of Australian visitors to Bali, which has long been a favorite destination. By allowing these tourists to easily connect with Bali’s rich cultural, natural, and historical offerings, the route is set to extend tourist stays and boost spending during their visit.

“This route aligns with our goal of reaching 1.9 million Australian tourists this year,” Marthini said. “Australia is one of Indonesia’s largest international tourist markets, and the Adelaide-Bali route will contribute significantly to our tourism targets.”
Australia remains a major source of international visitors for Indonesia, with the number of Australian arrivals to Bali continuing to show a positive growth trajectory. According to Statistics Indonesia (BPS) data, the number of Australian tourists visiting Indonesia increased by 17 percent in 2024, reaching 1.67 million visits.
From January to April 2025, 511,678 Australian tourists visited Indonesia, with a significant portion, 474,277, heading to Bali. This marked a 7 percent increase compared to the same period in 2024 when 441,162 Australian tourists visited Bali, reaffirming Bali’s status as a top destination for Australian travelers.
The Tourism Ministry has expressed high expectations for the new route. Captain Achmad Sadikin Abdurachman, Acting President Director of Indonesia AirAsia, believes that the new Adelaide-Denpasar route will help strengthen tourism relations between Australia and Indonesia. He noted that Indonesia AirAsia is not just transporting passengers but also fostering cultural exchange, economic cooperation, and contributing to two-way tourism development.
“This route is expected to bring over 74,000 Australian tourists annually to Indonesia,” said Abdurachman. He added that this new service provides not only direct access to Bali but also the opportunity to connect passengers to more than 130 destinations across Asia and beyond through AirAsia’s network.
Bali’s role in regional connectivity is increasingly critical for AirAsia, and the island’s position in Indonesia AirAsia’s network is integral to the airline’s strategy of connecting passengers from Australia to other exciting destinations within Indonesia and beyond. Bali’s welcoming environment for tourists is expected to act as a stepping stone for Australian travelers looking to explore Indonesia’s diverse attractions.
Abdurachman proudly stated, “We are excited to present Indonesia AirAsia’s first flight from Bali to Adelaide. This direct service not only provides easy access to Bali but also opens up affordable travel options for passengers to visit many more places across the region.”
This Adelaide-Denpasar route strengthens the tourism ties between Australia and Indonesia, reflecting the ongoing effort to grow international tourist traffic. Both countries have long maintained strong people-to-people ties, and this new direct flight makes it even easier for Australians to explore Indonesia’s diverse landscapes, cultures, and natural beauty.
“We are very optimistic about the potential of this route to connect people from Australia to the amazing destinations in Indonesia,” Marthini concluded. “By offering greater convenience and affordability, we believe this new route will help foster tourism growth in both countries.”
Bali remains one of Indonesia’s most sought-after destinations. The Tourism Ministry’s continued efforts to support sustainable tourism have bolstered the island’s appeal as a safe, attractive, and culturally rich destination. Alongside efforts to improve infrastructure and promote regenerative tourism, Bali continues to thrive as a regional and international tourism hub.
For Australia, Bali is not just a holiday destination; it’s a place to reconnect with culture, nature, and family-friendly activities. The island’s popular beaches, rich arts scene, and tranquil surroundings continue to make it a top choice for Australians seeking a relaxing and immersive vacation.
This new route also ties into Indonesia’s broader tourism ambitions, as the country seeks to further diversify its tourism offerings beyond Bali. With the opening of new routes like Adelaide-Denpasar, Indonesia is positioning itself as a hub for international tourism, connecting travelers from different parts of the world to its hidden gems like Lombok, Labuan Bajo, Yogyakarta, and Medan.
According to Marthini, the government’s focus is on not just maintaining Bali’s status as a popular destination but also helping other Indonesian regions reach their tourism potential. Lombok, for example, is becoming a major destination for those seeking a quieter, more off-the-beaten-path experience, while Labuan Bajo continues to gain recognition as the gateway to the Komodo Islands.
The introduction of the Adelaide-Denpasar direct route by Indonesia AirAsia marks an exciting chapter in Indonesia’s tourism industry. It’s a step toward fulfilling the country’s target of attracting 1.9 million Australian tourists annually while supporting the sustainable development of tourism across the nation.
The Tourism Ministry’s partnership with AirAsia reflects a broader strategy of leveraging international routes to enhance Indonesia’s appeal and ensure that it remains a prime destination for global tourists. With continued investment in tourism infrastructure and sustainability, Indonesia is well on its way to becoming a leading player in the global tourism market.
