This week, the Horizon Air Board of Directors appointed Jason Berry as the president of Horizon Air. With 28 years of experience in the industry, Berry will be responsible for leading strategy, managing operations, and engaging with the airline’s approximately 3,500 employees. He will oversee the airline’s commitment to providing outstanding regional air service on behalf of Alaska Airlines. Berry takes over from Joe Sprague, who is retiring from his role as Horizon president after four years and will transition to a senior advisor position at Alaska Airlines.

Berry became a senior vice president of operations at Horizon at the beginning of 2023. In this capacity, he managed personnel in the four biggest workgroups of the regional carrier as well as important areas of the airline’s operations. Berry worked for Air Canada for two years as vice president of cargo before joining Horizon. Berry is a graduate of Central Washington University and holds an Executive MBA from the University of Washington’s Foster School of Business.

Berry expressed that he had the remarkable opportunity to get to know the Horizon team over the past nine months. He said, “Horizon is an incredibly well-run airline, and our people have a special dedication and heart. The opportunity to lead Horizon is an immense honour.”

Alaska Airlines CEO Ben Minicucci said, “I look forward to his continuing contributions to Air Group’s success and am excited to welcome him to this leadership role.”

Berry, coming from an aviation family, began his career on the ramp while still in high school and brings years of industry experience and knowledge to his role as Horizon president. In 2019, he served as president of Alaska Airlines’ wholly owned subsidiary McGee Air Services, overseeing all aspects of aviation services ground handling, aircraft grooming, aircraft mobility services, check-in, and gate services.

From 2012 until June 2019, he led Alaska Air Cargo, with direct responsibility for cargo operations and compliance. During his tenure, he oversaw the transition of aircraft models and received the title of “Executive of the Year” by Air Cargo World magazine in December 2022.
