Many are from the Victorian era, and looking after some of the country’s most celebrated structures is both a privilege and a challenge.
Although maintenance is important, that’s just one part of our work. There are many more passengers today than when the rail network was first built, so we have to modernise and adapt our infrastructure as part of our Railway Upgrade Plan, to pave the way for better journeys.
On our Bridges, tunnels and viaducts page you can find out more about the work we do and the projects we’re involved in, from making structures suitable for freight trains, to upgrading the Severn Tunnel for electrification and installing bridges for the Ordsall Chord project in Manchester, creating better links between the city’s main train stations.
