Due to 2020’s badly impacted tourism, Sabah and Labuan experienced low domestic tourists with statistics showing clients and revenue getting declined by more than half.

Iskandar Mirza Mohd Yusof, the Tourism Malaysia domestic and events division senior director, explained that on the basis of Domestic Tourism Survey 2020 conducted by the Department of Statistics Malaysia, in 2020, Sabah’s domestic tourism was recorded demure.

This was due to the outbreak of Covid-19 and followed by rampant lockdowns.

“The number of domestic arrivals in Sabah declined by 53% with a total of 10 million visitors compared with 2019 which recorded 22 million domestic tourists.”

“Subsequently, this negative growth affected Sabah’s tourism receipts. Last year, the receipts amounted to only RM2.7bil compared with RM8.1bil in 2019. Similarly, for Labuan, the number of domestic visitors to the island declined by 79%. In 2020, there were only about 100,000 visitors. In 2019, Labuan received about 500,000 visitors.”
“Labuan recorded RM60mil in domestic tourist receipts in 2020.

‘“This was down by 84% compared with RM392mil in the previous year,” said Iskandar.

During a press conference he was speaking after launching the ‘My Destination Sabah & Labuan to Penang’ programme at St Giles Wembley Hotel in Penang.

To revitalise the industry, the business-to-business session saw 26 sellers from Sabah and Labuan seeking potential buyers, especially in the northern region.
